Healthy Eating in the School Cafeteria

With students across the country now back in school, many parents are faced with the difficult challenge of making sure their kids eat healthy while away from home.

Though some schools have been struggling to increase the nutritional value of the food they serve, the good news is that many school cafeterias continue to offer healthier options.

The best advice for parents iincludes monitoring the options that are available in your children's schools, talking to children about nutrition, and packing a lunch when the school's offerings don't meet your standards.

Schools have so much power when it comes to setting standards for food and drinks. I'm glad to see schools recognize the good they can do. Helping set good habits at an early age can carry over to a lifetime.

I agree with Kelly - you need to start children off eating healthy at home if you expect them to carry that on while they're in school. I write a lot about healthy eating for children on my website www.mykidshealth.co.uk

Good tips, healthy eating does start at home! Parents who promote healthy eating through their own actions are likely to find that their children are wanting to eat those same foods. Kids pick up so much that it's really important to model the behavior we want them to learn. It's encouraging that so many educators, parents, and advocates for nutrition are really stepping up to get healthier food back into schools!
